The Hanoverian Colonel known as ‘Der Lowe’ actually felt sorry for the newly appointed Ensign. He had seen the look before on the face of many young, untested officers. He knew the look very well. It was the look of fear.
“Vell”, said the Jager officer known as ‘Der Wurger’ as he drummed his fingertips on the tabletop, “Ve are vaiting, ja”.
“I am not certain he has the courage”, said the Lieutenant who commanded the Verden Field Battalion.
“I think he does, Sir Rat”, replied the Major General. “He is just more intelligent than most. After the experience of the first shot, he suspects what is coming next.”
Dang, that still burns, thought the newly commissioned Ensign, and they expect me to do it again! It was all he could do to keep his hand from visibly trembling as he slowly raised the shot glass of Jagermeister to his lips. Meeting the patient, blue gaze of his commanding officer, he tipped the glass and swallowed the contents in one gulp.
Gott im Himmel! The shot glass clattered to the tavern floor as the young Ensign virtually leapt straight up from his seat, overturning his chair in the process. The pain was clearly evident on the young man’s face as he began to dance around the room, leaping over every obstacle in his path with great agility, before settling into a corner and head butting the tavern walls in his attempt to alleviate his anguish.
“Well, what do we call him, gentlemen”, asked the Major General as he watched his newest officer cavort around the room.
“He reminds me auf das Kininchen mit de vay in vitch he leaps”, said Der Wurger.
“And he obviously has a hard head like you , sir”, said Die Ratte as he grins at his Commanding officer.
“I know what we should call him”, said Die Lowe. “What about Der Wolpertinger?”
“Yes, I like it”, said the Major General. “The body of a rabbit, the horns of a deer, and the fangs of a Hanoverian Warrior. Der Wolpertinger it is then!”
