Post subject:  Quick Question Regarding Big Battles, Night Battle??

Hi all,

So I just have a quick question about battles, and their conclusions. Right now, I'm on turn 13 of a 40 turn battle with the British as a part of a single player campaign. This is my first major battle, with 6 Corps involved.

Well anyway, it is 6:00pm and the game started at 2:45pm, with of course 15 minute turns. At that rate, in order to conclude the battle at 40 turns, it will be 12:45am! In reality, I tend to doubt that combat was done, or even considered past nightfall. Is this just something the game ignores?

I'm sure I'll figure it all out as I press on in the battle, but I'm just trying to plan. Will the game end at 12:45am, or will their be some sort of early conclusion due to the lack of daylight?

Regards,

I think night turns are more longer, you can read how long pushing F2 (Parameter data) and checking "Time Parameters".
Hope it helps!

Each night turn is 1 hour long

David,

Whether or not you continue the battle at night is between you and your opponent. There are a number of limitations built into the game engine, like the 1 hex visibility as well as penalties for moving in formation, much higher likelihood of routs and longer recovery from disorder. So, while there area number of disincentives to doing a lot of fighting at night, it is possible.

Cheers!

It is most critical to reach some agreement on how both your opponent and you will conduct your night time operations in a campaign that spans several days. A lot of players use the darkness to force march and gain an advantage, never giving their men a rest, and never suffering any penalties for so doing. Very unrealistic, but it happens. If you have a game that spans several nights, you need to conclude a gentlemen's agreement on how you will conduct yourselves during the darkness.

But how will the HPS Waterloo AI handle nightfall? I doubt he is very much of a gentleman.

The AI will allow him to continue the fight under the rather minimal penalties that Jeff outlined above. If you do not believe that your opponent is a gentlemen, I suggest you be prepared to fight during the darkness. You will have to make certain that your lines are secure, and your ZOCs are covered, as he can easily use the 1 hex visibility to move right past you.

Salute!

I would also point out that when playing against the AI, when you have Fog of War turned on this only pertains to you, not the AI. While you will not see enemy units out of your LoS, the AI is not affected by this. In other words all of your forces are fully visible to the AI, and therefore no attempt at sneaking units around the map is effective, nor is trying to conceal your own forces.

What? He Cheats THAT much?? I Knew he was no gentlemen from the moment I laid eyes on him.

Yet it doesn't seem to be helping him that well at that! Even when he can see all my troops, I still have both his flanks compromised xD But I will admit, he is set to "reckless."

I shall just have to find a proper gentleman to comence with then, perhaps after I finish up this school term at the end of next week I will have the courage to throw my sword out for a full large scenario. At the moment, I'm engaged in a healthy contest with a Mr. Tony Barrett, but I'm so swamped, one battle at a time for now.

Thanks!
