What?

No raucous fanfare?

No parade?

No thumbing noses in the general direction of the coalition types?

This will not do. The Vieille Garde has a new officer. Let the clarion sound and the names of the vanquished be remembered, as their service to France has raised up Gen. Devon Hunt Hill to the ranks of the invincibles.

Congratulations and welcome!

Huzzah!

Post subject:  FREE DRINKS

My mistake "Helga As long as officers can walk to the bar drinks are on the Guards treasury tonight"
Ears should perk up all over the tavern at that !

I agree, sir!

And in honor of the celebration, I think we should open up the Rhine to the enlisted men of the Vieille garde as well. Or at the very least, the sergeants and members of the Gendarmes.

Cheers!

As Marechal Bardon spoke the front door of the tavern crashed open. In walked 22 men each of them beautifully attired in the uniform of the Chasseurs à Cheval de la Veille Garde

A line was formed either side by the guides to form a pathway from the door to the General Hill’s table. Shortly thereafter in walked the familiar arrogant figure of General Knox his sword drawn looking around the tavern with marshal prose eyeing the sharpshooting Hanoverians carefully.

After a close inspection of the availability of weapons he noted all were set in their normal neutral rack near the door.

Helga seemed annoyed with him for breaking the weapons rule with his drawn sword but he dismissed her whining with a swish of his hand. Once satisfied at the safety of the tavern he signaled outside and thereafter a shortish man with cutting blue eyes entered the tavern he walked thoughtfully with his hands joined behind his back up the pathway the guardsman had cleared for him.

General Knox signaled towards the table. With that the Tondu approached General Hill and extended his hand. All of the French officers were in awe of the god of war and unprompted they kneeled.

The Emperor quickly had them rise and spoke a few quite words to General Hill tugging his ear gently.

“Welcome to my Old Guard General Hill I have studied your long career with me since Marengo and you are a most worthy addition sir. You and I are now bonded forever and we shall fight for the glory of France until the end of our days” the Emperor then signaled to General Knox and a large bag of gold was produced and deposited on the bar”

The Tondu turned to all in the tavern and said “The Empire of France is buying all of the drinks tonight to celebrate this great day. I give you General Hill, Old Guardsman and warrior of France”

He then spun around and walked back out of the tavern the Guard Chasseurs gradually folding in behind him all with their weapons drawn.

With that he was gone leaving only General Knox at the tavern door sword drawn providing the final guard. He hesitated for a minute and then pulled the door shut behind him

Outside the clatter of hooves signaled the departure of histories greatest soldier. Inside the queue at the bar quickly grew.

I must admit, you are becoming more my equal in honors and awards with every year that goes by.....one day you will no doubt surpass me.

Congratulations on your peerage and appointment to command the Elite Gendarmes of the Guard. Surely they will be a great help in policing the gambling in Luxemburg and the smuggling in Marseilles. I look forward to meeting you on the field of honour.

The scribe looked up with keen interest at the sudden entry of the formidable Guides and their legendary leader, General Knox.

Scarcely had he begun to make a sketch of the scene when he was astonished to see the last figure to enter the tavern -

It was Him - Truly Him!

Recollecting himself, the scribe set about sketching more rapidly, determined to capture this moment in his journal.

He paused to admire his rendering of Le Tondu tugging on the ear of General Hill.

That is marvelous his friend the Tirailleur said as he made to join him, bringing with him several drinks paid for from the very bag of gold so recently deposited upon the bar.

Sirs. It is an honor to achieve this level. To command such a fearsome unit. Been a long road. Currently on the road myself, which happens often. Appreciate all the kindness of the many commanders over the years. Appreciate my opponents, yes, you Scott. Lost my sword to you a few times. It was nice to visit you this past week. Jim Walsh, a very old friend of mine and fellow road warrior. My vagabond cousin, Clinton, often found traveling with me from place to place. The many others too. Thanks Mon Commandants, Corbin, Owczarski, Kling, Nowacki, Stone, Peterson and Jensen for all the kindness too. Thanks to my officers of the 2ème Division, IVème Corps d'Armée. You all do me proud. Drinks are the order of the day I believe. Thank you General Knox.
