Gidday Jim and others. Archduke Charles was fine officer Jim and inflicted Napoleon's first setback at Aspern Essling. As for me I have always loved Napoleon but a personal favourite next level down is Lannes. When he passed in 1809 the army and the Emperor were never the same. |

Yes Colin, he certainly was better than anything else the Austrians had to offer. From the little I know, it seems that the Austrians had competent and brave regimental officers but once you went up to brigade, division, corps, and army levels, they got progressively worse, with some possible exceptions in the Revolutionary period and later towards the end in 1813-1814, when they seemed to have some officers who actually knew how to manage a corps on the march and in battle.. |
