I found a picture that showed a cruise ship going into Saint Helena, can't imagine from God knows where, but I certainly want to go to both of them some day.

When I was in the French Navy I saw a few time Elba but we never stopped there. It's easily accessible in comparison to Saint Helena.

The French Consul Michel Dancoisne-Martineau who has been in charge of the French Domaine (The house and the surroundings are French territory since 1857) has been in St Helena since the end of the 80s I think. He as a blog (in French) and has been talking for years about the renovation to Longwood. For now you can go there only by ship and I think there is one ship between St Helena and South Africa.

One of the newspapers of the island talks about the visit of the president of Fondation Napoleon here page 20 http://www.sams.sh/sentinel/Sentinel_140116.pdf (very short article)
The other newspaper talks about it too: http://www.saint.fm/wp-content/uploads/ ... 140117.pdf

But anyway, if you can wait until 2016 it will be possible to go to Saint Helena by plane, they are building the airport (it was supposed to open in 2015) there is an update on the website of the Domaine http://domainesdefranceasaintehelene.bl ... -2014.html

Around 1964, I was in stationed in Panama. Many other nations Navy ships docked there before or after transiting the Panama Canal. I was not in the Navy.

I have been aboard British and French ships.

Both were very interesting. One of the French ships I was on was a helicopter assault ship (I don't remember the exact name) and we went aboard for lunch.

We were all amazed!! Lunch was excellent, cafeteria style of course, with the usual soda, water and milk machines PLUS A wine machine!!! We took FULL advantage of that machine.

Afterwards, we went around the ship and hit SEVERAL BARS/lounges around the ship. The pilot lounge was the most raucous, but when we asked about being on duty, having to fly, etc, they said they never have problems, either in the dining rooms or in the lounges!!!

NOT like the US military!!!!!

Ah yes - the Dry USN ships - However the US military has many advantages over the UK military.

I did the Nijmegan March - many many years ago. It is to celebrate the British Paratroopers, forget the name of the operation but think film A Bridge Too Far and the bridge they took at Nijmegan. Basically the March is 25 miles a day on 4 consecutive days - and No Holland is not all flat!.

Anyway ..... For the European teams a continental breakfast was laid on, no bacon, fried eggs or beans etc. At breakfast we collected cold meat and bread to make our packed lunch.

Set off each morning between 0400 & 0500 hrs. Usually at about 0800 hrs we could smell the American chuck wagon from some distance. We marched past drooling at the smell of steak and onions!

Happy days though.

That's not a good place... I know a guy who was able to escape from it...

But we could send you to a smaller island just south of Elba: Montecristo.
