A glance on the calendar makes me hurriedly compose a new trivia thread.

Again it's about battles and again about similar ones. So.

Twice upon a time a very specific battles happened. Almost pure mirror fight. The ones that demonstrated very well the strength and weakness of the different arms. The demonstration was so evident that both the events are usually mentioned in histories of cavalry and arty. Didn't read much histories of infantry, but surely they are to be present there as well. They are usually mentioned in a didactic role.

But also they could be used to compare effectiveness of the arms in the armies in question. Not in favour of the French one.

But along with these roles they contained some interesting events. In both of them Sovereign Majesties charged home. Quite different men, with quite different attitudes and reasons of conducting a charge.

So, the questions are:
1. What are the battles in question?
2. What are they usually demonstrating?
3. Who were the Majesties in question?
4. Why they commited charges?

No. We need someone with a title of at least a King. And Senarmont was created baron only in recognision of the feat.

In 1812 at Borodino the French cuirassiers attacked friendly Saxon heavy cavalry. The Saxons were pursued by the Russians and fleeing toward French lines. But the French took Saxons' white outfits for Russians' cuirassiers (white uniforms) and charged them.

In 1805 at Austerlitz several French cavalrymen led a large group of Austrian prisoners when Russian dragoons charged. The Russians however instead of attacking the French they cut and slashed the Austrians ! Seeing this French Marshal Murat thought that the Russians must be "some friendly cavalry" (Bavarians ?) and ordered French artillery not to fire on them. After the slaughter of the Austrians the furious dragoons rushed against Murat and his staff !

One reason why I prefer little use of cavalry ;o)

I don't have an answer either, but a couple questions -

Does the scope of the question include the 1790s??

And, did the king in question have to be a king at the time of the charge (thinking of Murat)?

Or, just tell me the answer and I'll let you know if you're right... :frenchlol:
