Post subject:  Paintings of the French Revolutionary Wars & Napoleonic Wars

Good day gentleman
I'm sure that all here are interested in paintings of the French Revolutionary Wars & Napoleonic Wars, besides the delight of watching such paintings they surely proof as a versatile source for many other things, I for example use them also as wallpapers on my PC as they make a remarkable background.

Within the huge mass of pictures on the web it's a nightmare to point to a specific picture(starting with possible copyright problems), even when simply aiming for the best version others might search for a different version , so for now I will rather post the painters who did paintings that cover the mentioned eras, that way it should be easy for all interested to search for pictures of these painters and pick out whatever they need.

Averyanov, Alexander (sometimes written as Alexander Averianov)
I found no wiki entry for him but he seems to be born in 1950 so a rather "modern" arist, simply google and you will find a lot stuff from him.

Charlet, Nicolas Toussaint
Known for his His "Grenadier de Waterloo" from 1817, with the motto "La Garde meurt et ne se rend pas" (a famous phrase frequently attributed to Cambronne, but which he never uttered, and which cannot, perhaps, be traced farther than to this lithograph by Charlet).

Cogniet, Léon
Know for "La Garde nationale de Paris part pour l’armée, Septembre 1792" (The Paris National Guard on its way to the Army, September 1792).

Lejeune, Louis-François
Joined the French Army and received his baptism of fire in the battle of Valmy in the same year, he became aide-de-camp to Marshal Berthier in 1800, a post he retained until 1812 and in which he took an active part in practically all of the Napoleonic campaigns. He brought to the rank of général de brigade and was allowed to leave the Army in 1813, afterwards he devoted himself to painting and made an important series of battle-pictures based on his experiences.
Best known for his masterwork depicting the battle of Borodino or "Battle of Moscow, 7th September 1812" from 1822.

Detaille's Vive l Empereur is in the Art Gallery of NSW -I got a photo of it somewhere -paid a visit to it some years ago (this gallery also has a pretty famous painting of Rorke's Drift as well by another well known artist).

I will have to dig this one out of one of my hard drives and post it somewhere.

Napoleonic paintings are within their wider collections....

Lady Butler (Elizabeth Thompson)

(3 November 1846 – 2 October 1933) was a British painter, one of the few female painters to achieve fame for history paintings, especially military battle scenes, at the end of that tradition. She was married to Lieutenant General Sir William Butler, and is still often referred to as Lady Butler. Some of her most famous military scenes come from the Napoleonic Wars, but she covered most major 19th-century wars and painted several works showing the First World War.

Richard Caton Woodville (7 January 1856 – 17 August 1927) was an English artist and illustrator, who is best known for being one of the most prolific and effective painters of battle scenes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

George Dawe

George Dawe (6 February 1781, St James's, Westminster – 15 October 1829, Kentish Town) was an English portraitist who painted 329 portraits of Russian generals active during Napoleon's invasion of Russia for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace. He relocated to Saint Petersburg in 1819, where he won acclaim for his work from the artistic establishment and complimentary verses by Pushkin.

Thanks guys, added the noted artist to the first post.
Too bad the special French chars seems to break the URL function, so for now some have to be manually copied to the browser to be used.

@Cezary Pluskwa
Is there any specific artist I should take a look at?
Unfortunately its rather hard to check for Napoleonic material with all the text in Polish.

@Scott
OK hope you don't mind that I excluded the "Portraits_by_George_Dawe" link as that link can be found on the "Category:George_Dawe" link I put in.
BTW Lady Butler (Elizabeth Thompson) is a nice catch, a woman doing history paintings that alone is something noteworthy especially in the time she lived.

@David
I have also let out the specific picture links and instead use the link to the Wikimedia cxommans, that should give the user all what Wiki has to offer on Philippoteaux.
BTW Philippoteaux is an interesting artist with his "cyclorama" paintings.

Does it just look like or is it really so big?
Seeing it in a museum makes a very different impression, alone that frame already seems to underline the scene that is captured in the picture.

No it is really that big -- the trooper in the foreground is either life-size or even maybe a little bigger. I don't have the actual dimensions but the paintings off to the side -those are about a meter wide (iirc) -it has been awhile.
