There is a Murmansk Regiment in the Russian order of battle at Leipzig and Kulm. Does that name indicate that the regiment was stationed in the Murmansk region or recruited there? I have tried googling them and did not come up with much. I am not even sure that the town of Murmansk existed in 1813. I would appreciate any information that anyone might have. Thanks, |

Bob - for the 1812 OB on Wiki I found this: (part of the 3rd Division - 3rd Infantry Corps at Borodino) Reval and Muromsk Infantry Regiments So George Nafziger may have made a typo on that regiment. I would like to hear from one of the Russian members? I cannot find a "Muromsk, Russia." Where was this regiment recruited from? Is Muromsk an archaic name for a modern placename in Russia/Ukraine/other? I see "Murmansk" in Kulm, Kulm-Teplitz and also a "Murom" in Alt-Dresden OBs. In what formation are you seeing "Murmansk" in the Leipzig OB? |

Bill, Thanks for the information. I did see a reference to the "Revel and Murmansk Infantry Regiments" in a post at Orendels OoB depot - HistWar, a miniatures forum, and the poster referred to Project Leipzig 1813 as a source. I guess there are typos all over the place. |

Dear Bob and Bill, the names of the regiments at the time had nothing to do with the place they were recruited from and were quartered at. This particular regiment dates back to the times of Peter the Great being raised in 1708. The regiment had silver trumphets as a special distinction for the participation in capture of Berlin in 1760. It also took part in the war of 1799 for the most part under the name of Povalo-Shveikovski. As an aside note, as Ilia Ulianiv notes in 1812 it had the Brown Bess muskets. The correct name is Muromski, originating from the town of Murom. Bill, the form "Murom Infantry Regiment" is consistent with your policy of naming the regiments. The town of Murmansk wouldn't be founded for another hundrad years. The Wikipedia page about the regiment (in Russian) https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9C%D1 ... 0%BB%D0%BA About Murom https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murom About Murmansk https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murmansk Hope it helps.
