 La Grande Armée - Officer returning to the Eagles. By order of l'Empereur Napoleon I. and Le Grand Quartier-Général Impérial, Chef d'Escadron Dirk Schulze has been re-activated and is hereby assigned to: 7e Régiment de Hussards, Brigade Cavalerie Légère, III Corps d’Armée. Chef d'Escadron Schulze, I hereby return your badges of rank.  Please join me in welcoming Dirk back to La Grande Armée and the NWC.

Monsieur le Chef d'Escadron Dirk Schulze. It appears the Emperor is recalling his sharpest blades to the front. I extend a formal Willkommen back to the profession of arms. I note with interest your return to the 7th Hussars. We Austrians have a healthy respect for the French Leichte Kavallerie. You Hussars are famous for your magnificent uniforms and your reckless Todesverachtung (defiance of death), riding as if the Devil himself were snapping at your heels. However, a word of friendly warning from across the lines: While you gallop ahead to scout and harass, remember that the Austrian Ulanen are always watching the flanks. Gute Jagd! |

Chef d'Escadron Dirk Schulze, In your honor, I have called a ceasefire for tomorrow, and all officers are encouraged to celebrate the event by drinking as much of our favorite wine (Merlot de Fontainebleau) as possible. Besides, when the news reached the battlefield of your reinstatement, the enemy Armée retreated so fast that there wasn’t a single soul left to inform of the ceasefire. |

 Comrades, brothers in the saddle, I thank you. I have ridden long roads and buried good men. I have seen snow, dust, and fire, have seen horses fall and men stand firm — and yet I know: as long as I remain firmly in the saddle and wield the blade with sure hand, my place belongs at your side. The years have taken some speed from my horse, but none from my will. My hand still knows the sabre. My eye still finds the enemy. When the trumpets sound, I will ride where you ride. When steel is drawn, mine will be first or it will be last. Let the enemy learn what it means when old Hussars return to the saddle. May the wind brush our furs, may the saber sing brightly, and may no enemy ever say that the Hussars hesitated ! For France, for honor Dirk |

It is good to see a French officer of the famous Brigade Infernale return to the ranks. Experience gained — and lost — always sharpens the blade. As a fellow officer of the Imperial Russian cavalry, I can only say this: your return has been noted… and not without interest. May your squadrons be well mounted, your orders clear, and your Emperor’s eagles ever ready — for sooner or later, we shall surely meet upon the battlefield. Until then, welcome back to active service.  The guns are not yet silent, and the sabres still gleam in the sunlight…
