Post subject:  Random Bridge Damage

I am playing Jon Thayer in a Camapign Wagram game. There are a few bridges that he has to repair to cross. He has done so in one case, but then without any activity on my part, it become destroyed again. I have seen a message during the replay referencing "random bridge damage".

Can someone explain what is happening?

And perhaps more importantly tell me how I can order up more of this random bridge damage to stop those French.

Hi Bob,

To simulate the Austrians floating debris and such downstream during Aspern-Essling, JT put in a random bridge destruction. It will happen if no Austrians are around, anywhere.

It would be nice if he could tie this feature to the presence of enginiers along the river.

As memory serves, the mill (and other assorted garbage) the Austrians dumped into the channel started from "higher" up the river than the map shows.

It's also a reflection that the Danube was in flood stage all on its lonesome, without any Austrian help.

Remember to give the mill workers a nice reward for saving my left flank.

Thanks for the feedback.

I experimented with fire-ships - artillery that could use some path hexes I put in the river so that they could move. Problem is they couldnt unlimber in the river. Thus I had to put a land hex by the bridge locatations. The results were fun to watch.

The guns were doing a good number on the bridge but nearby units of the French were helping to destroy the fireship with their fire.

Obviously not a good solution but I had fun playing around with it a bit.

The maps would have to be changed to allow for paths to be added to the rivers. A ship graphic would have to be added.

Al - are the ships in the EAW series able to be damaged?

Would be nice to have fire ships added to Wagram and the series in general.

Imagine Bavarian fireships at Landshut! So much for that great Austrian advance.

Bob,

Actually the "mill workers" had their livelihood destroyed[:p].

Austrian engineers literally moved a water mill off its foundation on the left bank of the Danube, near Aspern, coated it with tar, put it on top of two boats ballasted with stones, towed it out on the river and then set it alight before launching it at the bridge connecting the Right Bank of the Danube with Lobau Island. It completely demolished the bridge just before Davout's corps could cross over and seal a French victory on the 2nd Day of the battle. The French were unable to re-build the bridge until after they withdrew back to Lobau and could then use the pontoons and bridging material of the 2nd bridge (Lobau to Left Bank).
