Today a new Pope was announced. Much to the world's relief it was not me. To be honest, yesterday's black smoke resulted from me turning down the offer via telephone. The CC (Cardinal's College) refused my demand to reimage Rome back to the days of the 1st Empire. *sigh* I suppose they disagreed with having pictures of Napoleon 1er everywhere. Although, it may have been my insistence that nuns begin dressing in the lastest ladies' styles of the 1st Emipre! Honest folks. I did everything I could do to try and get Al to accept the offer. Even allow him to hang a picture of his favorite general in his new Papal office. Ronald MacDonald![:D] But Al turned us down so we gave the job to .... DIERK!!! A German pope. Trivia time. When was the last time a Pope came from Germany? Wow! Germany gets to put in the first pope since before the Reformation! And right around the time of the Battle of Hastings. And here I thought that Bismarck was a pope! (no silly, he's the capital of North Dakota!) Oberst Wilhelm Peters 2nd Kuirassiers, Reserve Korps, Austrian Army |

The German press is actually advertising him as the first German pope since Hadrian VI (1522-23). However, Hadrian was actually from the Spanish Netherlands. Then there is Stephan IX (1057-58), but he was from Lorraine, nowadays France. Both, thus, were from the Holy Roman Empire, but I wouldn't count them as German in any sense of the word. Which brings us to Victor II (1055-57), who was from Eichstaett in Bavaria (just outside the Eckmuhl map, I'd want to add). I think he was truly the last German pope before Benedict XVI. Which makes it 948 years. [:)] Général de Division D.S. <font color="pink">I see no reason for surprise that the Pope would be Bavarian. Damn it, you should all be Bavarians, say I!
