Post subject:  Skirmisher Question

Been playing an NRC scenario PBEM. My opponent bypassed some skirmishers in a town, bringing up his supply wagons behind the main body. I promptly OVERRAN his wagons with the skirmishers. Is this a bug? I can find nothing in the rules indicating this should be possible.

Thanks

Provided you have the movement points supply wagons will simply get overrun, you do not need to melee them. Not a bug. As for the ethics of such raiding, well that depends on your opponent. I have no problem with it personally.

This rule stopped the ridiculous play of some who would use their wagons to block the approach of units in desparate situations.

This is not the American plains. Its Napoleonics.

Our supply wagon folks are not armed with Winchesters let alone Sharps, Henry's or other buffalo guns.

The same is true with leaders. While I would like to see some kind of escape possibility for the leader they remain vulnerable and need an escort. The same is true of wagons. To keep them from being taken I keep them with large units or large stacks.

Wagons do not retreat from combat - they are capture instead. Just FYI in case you were wondering ...

His opponent has no problem with the tactic, as I never should have let those guys run loose in my rear.....

Heh, if he only bypassed and didn't isolate... he brought it on himself [:D]

This is why rear area security is important. A good job for reserve light cavalry.
I have also modified my OOBs & PDTs to address this issue. Rather than having all cavalry armed with sword or lance, I have some light cavalry units armed with carbines (1-4 2-1) or pistol (1-1) who work well in the rear area security role. Also makes it more intersting when attacking squares. The cavalry doesn't have to actually assault to inflict losses, they can ride around the square, a hex or two away, and shoot back. Something that did occur.

Cadet Davis,

Please be sure to discuss the fact that you are using a modified OOB & PDT with any PBEM opponents, BEFORE THE GAME STARTS, to avoid subsequent contretemps.

To be sure. I actually have 3 separate sets of games installed on my computer. One is stock, right off the game disk, for gaming within this group, so no problem with modified files in Group Games. The second has only the basic OOBs & PDTs modified from 25 man to 5 man increment, and one set with all sorts of mods (5 man increment, 18 hex movement of Cav and horse art, many new weapons, rearranged and supplemented OOBs, additional leaders, totally new and vastly expanded Unit.BMP file.
