Post subject: | Night Turns? |
Hello All, I am hoping someone can help me, In HPS games can you continue to fight through the night or is there a rule i have not found limiting this. I am no expert but i was under the impression that the fighting stopped at night (exception villages?), i only know of Victors night attack at Talavera. I have found the night rules relating to line movement and disorder recovery and i know that you recover fatigue quicker at night and turns are an hour, but nothing else? Do units gain fatigue by moving at night (like PzC)? Also twilight, is that before dusk and after dawn? I have always sort of thought of them as the same (i know i will be wrong in that). Sorry if this is a bit stupid of me, but i am playing a game of Aspern-Essling and i need the answers before the darkness comes![8D] Thanks for any help, LJ |

the fight at night is ugly, I don´t suggest that you fight at night, is better rest you troops until the next day. Jeka could add something to effects of this topic too http://www.venezuela-emb.org.au/images/flag.jpg |

I agree, i do not want to fight at night, but there seems to be nothing to stop my opponent attacking anyway [:(] Maybe a another house rule is needed to keep things historical [?] LJ |

You could agree that there would be NO night movement, unless a unit that is in direct contact with the enemy MAY move out of contact. Ernie Sands GdD,1e Brig,1eme Div,VI Corps,AdR President, Colonial Campaign Club |

In multi day battles I usually negotiate a general night truce with my opponents. No combat, no major movement, just sorting out units, stragglers catching up, and wagons moving because they're so slow. Units don't gain fatigue by being active at night, but a petition to introduce it, supported by a large portion of the active members of this club, will be submitted to HPS shortly. Dawn and dusk, usually one hour, sometimes more, are the twilight turns. Visibility is limited, that's all. In night turns, all the things you mentioned in your post apply. Not during dusk and dawn though.
D.S. You have to keep in mind the reason troops didn't fight at night in this era: it was risky and the cost - in terms of fatigue - was very high. The present penalties for night fighting are pretty severe (disorder, rout, lack of opportunity for accelerated recovery from fatigue) but sometimes it might seem worth taking the risk - as at Talavera - if an opportunity were attractive enough. I agree with the suggestion there should be a negative fatigue factor from fighting at night (in addition to the loss of a positive one for not moving we have presently) but the option should be there, for those brave or foolish enough to try.
