Post subject:  Vaandrig?
Ok, time to prove I am the ugly American. What is Vaandrig? I found it under ranks for some of our Dutch brethren. Is it the equivalent of a Lieutenant. Thanks in advance for your help.

If the common Germanic root is any indication, Vaandrig in Dutch should equal Fähnrich in German. That would translate as Ensign.

Praporschic in Russian infantry, arty and dragoons, Kornet in cavalry, Khorunzhy in cossacks and Michman in the Navy. It's the rank equivalent (first officers rank, just under lieutenant), I'm not sure if the initial meaning of all these words was the same.

Two of these at least seem to be of foreign origin.

Kornet = Kornett (German) or Cornet (English) = an ensign in the cavalry

Michman = Midshipman (English) = an ensign in the navy

Yes, Dierk, I just was not sure of spelling[:I]

I also heard praporschic was a "derivative" from "prapor" meaning a "standard" and the rank means the man bearing one. Khorunzhy has actually the same meaning - the man bearing "khorugv'" the same standard, usually with Christian emblems. Nowdays it's used only for holy colors of the Church but in XVIII-XIX century they were used as colors for all militia troops. And earlier actually all of the colors were called this way.
