IN the French army we have 2 ranks that are basically the same thing butr for different bracnches of the armed forces: Infantry - Chef de Batallion Cavalry - Chef d'Escadron I am woindrering if there are other ranks that operate this way. For example... is there a rank simillar to those above only used in the artillery ?

Monsieur le Marechal Baron John Corbin Duc de Paive Commanding the Division de Cavalerie de la Jeune Garde NWC President
|

There is a lot of examples for that phenomenon, especially in German armies. The Austrian army used General der Kavallerie (cavalry) and Feldzeugmeister (infantry) for the rank of full general. All German armies had Hauptmann or Kapitän (infantry) and Rittmeister (cavalry) for captain; Fähnrich (infantry) and Kornett (cavalry) for ensign; Feldwebel (infantry) and Wachtmeister (cavalry, artillery) for sergeant. It operates not only for ranks; for instance, a company in the infantry is a squadron in the cavalry and a battery in the artillery; an artillery battalion is called Abteilung in German armies. Also, "commander" is really hard to translate into German because there are many different terms that all mean the same thing to an English-speaker. A platoon commander is a Zugführer; a company commander a Kompaniechef or Kompanieführer; a battalion, regimental, brigade or division commander a Kommandeur; a corps commander may be a Kommandeur, but also be a Kommandierender General, if his corps is recruited from a peacetime Generalkommando; an army commander or higher is an Oberbefehlshaber. And the commander of a fortress, place, town, garrison etc. is a Kommandant. [8)]
D.S. sorry but you have to put an "s" at the end of escadron chef d'escadrons as this officer was supoosed to be under a Colonel (rgt head) and over the captains (single escadron head), in charge of a group of them [8D][;)] Guillaume AYMONIER-AMELINE Comte de Strasbourg Duc de Ratisbonne Maréchal de France 1er Rgt de Grenadiers à Cheval VIEILLE GARDE 3ème Div° Cavalerie Légère IIIeme Corps d'Armée AdN |

Almost the same in Russian army: Kornet was the first cavalry rank while Praporschick was the first rank in infantry, artyllery, engeneer and dragoons troops. In the navy it was equal to Michman. In cavalry there were ranks of Shtabs-rotmistr and Rotmistr while in all the other arms - arty, infantry, dragoons and so on these ranks were called Shtabs-kapitan and Kapitan. To conclude there were Generals of Infantery, Cavaler, Altillery, Engeneers and so on. All of them were in fact full general ranks.
![]()
Eyo Imperatorskogo Velichestva Leib-Kirassirskogo polku General-Mayor Anton Valeryevich Kosyanenko Commander of the Second Army of the West
|
