It was well nigh two hours since the sun had set. Long deep shadows hid most of the view across the fields of rye and barley. The woods were dark and impenetrable to the eye. Still the flash of musketry and cannon split the darkness in an unending cacaphony of thunder. The French army of Napoleon had crossed the Belgian frontier earlier that morning and the Prussian army had tried to stop them. The fighting had been relentless and the Prussians had gotten the worst of it. A fighting withdrawal is a difficult maneuver. But stiffening resistance and the growing darkness had finally stopped the French in the hills north of Frasnes. It was the fighting there that Sir Muddy, of the Household Guard Cavarly watched from afar.

For most of the day, the Anglo-Allied Army had been marching to the sound of the guns. When the dawn had broken and word of the French advance first arrived, the Anglo Army was far to the north and east. They were only now arriving near the fighting and had not seen any French other than an occassional cavalry patrol. They waited now, strewn along the roadsides and adjacent fields, for the great battle that was certain to begin with the dawn's earliest light. But Wellington was not with them. He had been detained in Brussels, they were told, on diplomatic business. What were they to do?

And so, this is the situation at the end of the first day of Napoleon's latest campaign. How it would end, no one could predict. Only time will tell.

MP Waterloo Campaign: Allies: Sir Muddy and Paco; French: Bill Peterson and Neville Worland.

Current status is a draw with a decided French advantage -- about 1500 points.

Stay tuned.

This sounds a horribly familiar story. I'm facing the Knox onslaught. Zieten is overwhelmed at Charleroi. Holding out in Chateletograd. Allies have just had the mighty Hanoverian cavalry released and a supply wagon has arrived as reinforcement in the north. Only turn 15 on that one.

In the other campaign I'm on turn 116. Bloodbath at Quatre Bras. I lasted so long because the French went the wrong way looking for the retreating Prussians. Now I think the game is up. The Hanoverian cavalry distinguished themselves however by running over all the Guard artillery on the first day.

Allies: Muddy and Paco? Are they not on the opposite sides in the club? Has it come to this? [:D][:D][:D]

I guess Paco must be tiring of beating up on the Allies so now he seeks some REAL competition! [:p]
