Post subject: BGW Cav Counter charge

Gentlemen, is it possible for a cavalry counter charge that does not end in a melee?

No in a word. Although occasionally because the AI determines the charge route the charging cavalry gets hung up on another enemy zoc.

This is one feature I'd particularly like to see carried over into the HPS engine, even if only in the old multiphase mode (preferably along with square-forming too).

If ever incorporated into HPS single phase mode, it would need to be assigned in advance by the player (ie. a counter-charge order issued in the previous turn, probably with a particular target selected, and only activated if the target actually charges), rather than automatically by the A/I.

Although I don't think it is likely to happen, I'd like to see a patch in the BG games, that allows a counter charge into an empty hex ahead of the charging enemy, so you can "cut them off".

Yes I to did like that option in TS games.
Good idea and one I think has merit.
If you could choose a zone or specific hexes and the targeted arm/s (inf/cav/arty)- the engine could identify the hex/s you propose and then be able to charge as soon as a legitimate tgt entered that hex.
However you would have to get the engine to be able to identify a path free of en unit ZOC otherwise your charges just get hung up.
Then there is the issue of en supporting fire into your path which I assume could be handled as it is now for normal movement/melee atk.
Would continueing the melee via AI be an option? Would gamers want to give away such control to the AI (unlikely I think [:)])

Hmmm that pesky issue of orders could rear its head again [8D].
