I'm getting ready to start on Oman's "A History of the Peninsular War Volume I". Has anyone read any of the volumes? Care to comment?

If you want the details then this is the best source. There are more modern treatises on specific battles but no body covers the entire war in the peninsula like Oman.

I have read several volumes and found the detail of the whole war in the the Peninsular to be excellent and a very readable historian.Well worth the time.

Only note I can think of about Oman - he advocated that the British firepower was the reason why the British line beat the French column.

Nosworthy has it right when he says it was the British countercharge.

Ed,

I would suggest that you begin by reading "Volume IX: Modern Studies of the War in Spain and Portugal, 1808-1814" first[;)]. It's a companion volume, edited by Paddy Griffith and published in 1999, with a marvelous collection of essays "reassessing Oman's contribution in the light of modern scholarship, while also explaining something of their own new findings."
