About 80% of the French field army was present at either Jena or Auerstädt; Bernadotte's I Corps spent the day of battle marching the wrong way. Not only did the French march more quickly to the decisive point, on the battlefield their veteran infantry was "flexible, quick and intelligent, although decidedly starved of fire drill." This flexibility, afforded by the kinds of formations the French employed, made them a potent force against the Prussians, who could not match their rapid evolutions nor quick changes of face.

"The Prussians attacked at the old regulation speed of seventy-five paces to the minute, while the French manoeuvred at the quick or double of 120 or 150. The consequence was that the French always succeeded in reinforceing their line in time to avert disaster."

Only the divisions of Gazan and Dupont had a high proportion of raw conscripts who, like the Prussians, were less flexible under battlefield conditions. Raw recruits and veterans alike were disoriented by the early morning fog. In their blindness friendly units could not cooperate nor even distinguish friend from foe. Napoleon had to postpone the attack on the 14th until 6:30 A.M.

Recently re-mounted on horses taken from the defeated Austrians, the French cavalry was well trained in "reconnaissance, screening and pursuit." Their results were, however, unsatisfactory. On the night of the 10th the Emperor was still unaware of the position of his principal foe, and all traces of the Saxons were lost. "Napoleon, little satisfied with his cavalry, authorized Lasalle to offer up to 6000 frs. reward for information of the Prussian point of concentration." Lacking the instinctual, native talent of their opposite numbers, the "standard of action in battle" of the French cavalry was also somewhat doubtful.

Excellent point Sifton.

Part of the success of the French between 1800 and and lets say 1808 was their relative speed and flexability. That's how they were able to kick the Austrians around so well in Italy (I would love to see a Marengo game) and everyone else.

This should be modeled in games set in that era. Later on the other countries (on the continent) picked up on the French system after successive defeats.

It is most definately NOT legal.

If you notice, that among other things, there is a cpe.exe file included, and the "file date" indicates it's not merely a copy of the old 1.01 patch (the only one that allows this kind of addon).

Gary is correct, it is a breech of copyright law to modify and/or distribute an exe for any HPS game without express written permission from HPS Simulations - which this definitely does not have.

Rich,

Are the sites that distribute the old 1.01 patches (for both Eckmuhl and Corinth) within the copyright laws? Also, can HPS take action against the person posting the illegal game at the Historical Napoleonic Campaign Club?

This happened once before. I was able to convince the person to take his mod off of the web.

Giving away our games is not a nice thing to do. I happen to be looking for work and the less I get in royalties the less I will be able to do for you guys. Frankly its getting desparate here ...

When I need a car I dont go out and steal one. We dont see software that way I guess. For the most part I have always bought all of my software. I can only think of one or two items I have used without a license number. And both of those are long gone ...

Bottom line - you only cut your own throat when you pirate or offer pirated copies to others. In the end the industry as a whole takes a dive. After all we are not MS ...[:(]

To the original topic, I'd always thought a plausible addition to the game system would be a 'force march' or 'double-time' mode: when activated a 'morale check' is taken; if failed, unit is Disordered; if passed unit has extra movement points, but accrues fatigue for every hex moved (or every MP spent?).

This would allow higher quality/better-trained infantry the option of more mobility while tending to keep the lesser trained troops grinding along at 10MP.

Robert et al - march rates have always intrigued me. Mainly the march rate differed much ... er, on the MARCH![:D] So I dont know if differing MP rates are needed.

The ability to double time would be nice but for use only on the road and the unit shouldn't be able to melee or come to within 5 hexes or an enemy unit. Or perhaps more.

Gentlemen,

It is a club: http://www.grimdahl.net/HNCC.htm

A very small one... Seems to be German based.

The main site (grimdahl.net) simply provides links to the above site, the ACWGC and the 1st Int. Battleground Club.
