Post subject:  Waterloo OB - Guard Lancers - Colbert's Brig

Guys - can anyone help. I am noting that the HPS Waterloo OB for Waterloo differs with Hofschröer and Nofi on the composition of the 1st and 2nd Lancers in the Fr. Imp. Gd.

These two sources say that the 1st Lancers only had 1 squadron. If so does anyone have the size of that squadron? And what of the 2nd Lancers? What size were they?

I am putting together a squadron OB for Waterloo and in conjunction with the 10 min. PDT file a historical battle scenario using the new OB.

So here is what we have in the game:

1st Lancers - 450 men
2nd Lancers - 400 men

From what I am reading it should be:

1st Lancers - 1 sqdn
2nd Lancers - 4 sqdns

5 sqdns total.

Monsieur on the 6 of june they form a column of some 1600 horseman. When the regiment regiment left its garrison it counted 1253 men and 955 horses due to the lack of equipment it was impossible to have more then 700 or 800 men mounted. 5 Sqns 833 menat the most.

Bill I understand the Sqd of Poles was the one from Elba but evidently there were poles in France who joined it on its return. I recall it was 100-125 strong on Elba so you could probably assume it was 160-180 as part of a 5 sqd regm of 850 odd.

Someone more expert than me may be able to be more exact though

Thanks Colin. Maybe go with 175. Charlie has the 2nd Lancers at 400. Sources say the brigade had 900 men. Dont know if the 2nd Lancers had 450 or 725! Anyway, just trying to break out the regiments into squadrons using Hofschroer's OB.

Bill,

There was a single regiment of lancers. The first squadron being Poles from the old 1st regt, while the other four squadons were French/Dutch/Germans from the old 2nd regt.

Here is some info from the Napoleon Series:

Guard Light Cavalry Division: 10 squadrons/12 guns
Lefebvre-Desnoettes, General de Division Charles, Comte

Chasseur-à-Cheval Regiment (5 sqns)
Lallemand, General de Brigade Francois-Antoine, Baron

Combined Horse Lancer Regiment (5 sqns)
Colbert de Chabanais, General de Division Pierre-David (dit Eduoard) Baron

1 sqn/1st Chevau-Legers-Lanciers Regiment
Jerzmanowski, Major Jean-Paul

4 sqns/2nd Chevau-Legers-Lanciers Regiment
Dubois, Major Charles-Marie-Joseph

1 Old Guard Horse Artillery Company
Favier (6 guns)

2 Old Guard Horse Artillery Company
Nasse (6 guns)

Gd Cav sqns were composed of two one-hundred man companies. A figure between 180-200 per sqn would be appropriate, imo.

Thanks Al. Do you have any idea on the total size or should I just go with Nofi who said 900 troopers? Sounds like normal sized squadrons. Basically 900 divided by 5 would equal (pulls out chalkboard and chalk) 180 each.

Unless someone objects I will go with that figure.
