Post subject:  Stacked units in Line both fired

Now here's a glitch that needs to be looked into. I just watched my opponents replay (twice in fact) and watched two of his battalions that were stacked and both in line, both facing the same direction, both fire in the offensive fire phase at the same unit of mine. Then as a test, at the top of my turn I selected one of my stacks, of three units in line (they had just successfully meleed the previous turn) and selected the bottom unit to fire. Sure enough I got the expected error message that only the top unit of a stack of units in line could fire.

So can anyone offer an explanation as to how it is that the French could fire all units stacked and in line, while Austrian units have to follow the rules? Oh, its a scenario in Eckmuhl.

You fire the top line first and then you move the bottom line to the top and then fire it at half value.

Thanks Bill. Ya know, that makes perfect sense. As you get older, even the simple answers can be tough to come up with.[:D][:I]

Hopefully someday there'll be some sort of fix for the large/small unit stacking issue.

Why should three small say 300-400 strong units need to stack up behind each other - and be an excellent target for artillery - and one large 1000+ strong Austrian unit doesn't need to stack?

Maybe the best available solution would be the EAW engine one, where units in line can all fire and don't need to stack and where guns only target a single unit?

Perhaps the stacking limit could be adjusted to represent the number of men who could actually deploy in line in the available space? Ideally, the line stacking limit might be set lower than the column stacking limit in the pdt.

Anyway, we really do need some sort of solution to the large/small unit size issue as this has a big impact on gameplay.

A line frontage rule is what is needed.

Use the Extended Line amount as the base.

Why dont you fire this off to Rich H.? You can borrow my idea. Just tell him to forward it to John.

The basic settings are 600 for 2 rank lines and 800 for 3 ranks lines.

Thus 3 French battalions (top to bottom) of 300, 450 and 300 would have the first two able to fire while the bottom wouldnt fire at all unless it moved to the front.

And frankly that shouldnt be allowed as it would disorder the other lines in front of it.

I have a stupid question ... how do you move a unit to the front?

Thanks :)

I totally agree with both Bill and Rich's comments about small vs large units firing form column. Even in ACW games all units in line in a stack get to fire.

I do have another question, now. Keep in mind for all practical purposes, I know nothing about computer programming, so I am really interested. How difficult is it to lift language, say from the ACW games and in a patch added it to, say, the Napo games? For example what would it take to lift the programming for an optional rule, like Manual Defensive Fire, from the ACW and make it a part of the Napo series? I only ask cause, as I said I truly have no idea what's involved. To a non programmer like myself it seems like it should be pretty easy, seeings as one is not inventing the wheel. I would appreciate any info to help me understand what's involved.
