[:D][:D][:D] Jim why that's a myth perpetuated by British historians. The guard mearly heard about a new brothel at Quatre Bras and briefly retired to visit it.

Hmmm, Colin one must ask how it was that the Prussians were in postion to observe the Old Guard and thusly deposit said alledged used suasage on the ground. Did not three battalions of the OG advance with the MG against the thin red line only be driven back when our heroic Duke uttered those famous words "Now Maitlaned, now's your time". (Or something like that). SOOOOOOOOO, it must have been these fleeing members of the OG that caused a few new and untrained troopers of our valiant allies to perhaps slighty soil themselves as it were. Only the be rallied by Herr Blucher and led on to glorious victory and disgrace of the little Corsican ogre.

Actually two battalions of the Old Guard were among the defenders of Placenoit, from which they were ejected by Prussian IV Corps, which consisted mainly of Landwehr. So a Landwehr / Old Guard encounter did indeed take place, and the Old Guard lost (being badly outnumbered).

Indeed at one point Morand led forward two battalions of the Old Guard in a counter attack to relieve the young guard in Plancenoit who were beginning to fall back in disorder. Ironically Waterloo is known for the defeat of the guard but this brief attack by 2 btns put to rout a quantity of Prussians much higher than themselves (some say divisional sized) and was one of the most famous attacks by the old guard in the whole Napoleonic wars.

To quote Allesandro Barbero
(abdg)

'The Prussians in front of them, a force many times there number were driven back in disorder and then in a catastrophic rout.'

'At 7.30 in the evening Bluchers offensive was back to the starting point yet again'

By the way Ed enjoyed your post though!

In no way was the Old guard of 1815 the same Guard as there was in 1807 or 1809 nor 1812. Most didn't have the bearskin bonnets nor any of what Hollywood or that Hollywood in Italy would have you belive. As for the Young Guard it was a promotion for some of the line units a reware for what they did in 1813.We are beaten but never defeated! Nor were they the same class of 1814!

What Colin says is well documented in quite a few sources. Only two battalions did counter attack and apparently with the bayonet only, they never fired a shot!

The effect was the village was retaken, the Prussian advance was stalled for a while and the young guard defenders who had been holding out for some time and were totally outnumbered returned and re-occupied the village.
Fighting was still going on in and around Plancenoit right to the end.

The Guard did not retreat or rout. The guard was stopped, it retired (admittedly in some disorder from the british firepower). But then recovered and stood firm to cover the retreat of the rest of the army, dying were they stood.

Elite and unconquered even in defeat.
Hail the Glorious Guard!
