I can't enter the Mess Hall yet, so ask this question here:

In a miniatures game last night I watched a player use the 3 phases alowed him in the rules to 1. change facing, 2. move, 3. change facing, to march a battalion in column sideways (well out of combat range). I wasn't playing but just interested in the historical question of whether or not Napoleonic drill allowed a unit to move like that?

Anyone got their copy of Nafziger handy?!

Yes, the drill manuals of most of the nations allowed for that.

A simple left or right face to go in the direction you wanted to go would suffice but that kind of thing was not done right in front of the enemy.

In the game most of us would just move the unit to the side hex instead of doing the wheel or facing maneuver. Kind of a freebie that the series gives you.
