The rank of Generalfeldmarschall is held by the current and any previous Kommandeur des Königlich-Preußischen Armee-Korps (Commander of the Prussian Army Corps)/Oberbefehlshaber der Preußischen Armee (Commander of the Prussian Army).

It may also be awarded by the Commander to another senior Prussian officer, who has not served as Commander, for longtime service to the Prussian forces and/or outstanding battlefield performance over many years. An officer must achieve the rank of General der Infanterie or General der Kavallerie before this can be given consideration.
