New Recruit Welcoming:

Your Commission Begins Here

Your journey starts with a training game via Play by Email (PBEM). You will lead a small detachment from the Coalition against the French forces, commanded by one of our experienced training officers. This scenario will be played without the Fog of War (FOW), allowing you to observe the maneuvers of both sides and receive insightful feedback from your tutors. Upon completing the training game, you will be commissioned as a junior officer in the Coalition army of your choice. You will be assigned command of an infantry, cavalry, artillery or engineer unit and can then freely challenge the French officers of the club.

There is much to learn about these games, as Wargame Design Studio (WDS) is widely recognized as the most accurate simulation of Napoleonic warfare. Your personal learning curve will vary based on your background in Napoleonic military history, tabletop gaming, or other operational and tactical simulations.

Typically, a new officer progresses through five layers of learning in the game:

  • The Theory - Start by reading and becoming familiar with the game manual. Some players like to learn by simply playing the game. However, over time you will find that by referring to the game manual, you will begin to more comprehensively understand the game’s mechanics and strategies.
  • The Field Practice - Apply what you've learned in theory by practicing in the field. It is recommended to run a few small scenarios against AI opponents, practicing offensive maneuver and direct assaults.
  • Advanced Tactics: Cavalry and Artillery - Gain a deeper understanding of the specific roles and tactics for using cavalry and artillery. Master the combined arms tactics, which are essential in Napoleonic warfare.
  • Divisional-Level Maneuvers - Learn to apply different tactical frameworks at the divisional level, whether you are on the offensive or defensive.
  • Operational Level Command - Master the management of forces at the Corps and Army levels. This involves planning and executing complex maneuver, coordinating multiple units effectively.

Throughout your progression, your superiors will be available to guide you, provide assistance, and answer any questions you may have.

For now though off to the lecture halls where your training officer awaits!
