The 6th Corps was in reserve just a mile or two to the rear behind the Round Tops. Had Meade needed them they could have arrived in short order to either counterattack Pickett's remnants (with all three generals down, and all the colonels, they could not have put up much of a fight) or take up a ne...

There is no way in the world that Pickett, even if a miracle occurs, could have done more than held what he had gained at Cemetery Hill. Just for fun, I asked the A/I about it (I knew you will appreciate that) and it fully agreed: Even if the charge had achieved a breakthrough, the Union would have...

You two should just have a weekly debate as it would be the most interesting thing to read on the forums. If you state that Pickett breaks through the Union center but does not rout Meade then I don't really call that a victory for Lee. Thinking of our video game I would say that if Pickett takes C...

The above is "slightly" misleading as some titles have been out much longer than others. Corinth for example was the first title, and it is over 20-25 years old. Albeit upgraded many times as have them all. Forgotten was the most recent title, maybe 2-3 years old. It might be more interes...

Here's a correction to my earlier post regarding most played titles [I stupidly didn't check them all and used an old version of the DoR]. Here's the full list (according to the latest version of the DoR) with the count of recorded plays. 1. Gettysburg - 3,638. 2. Antietam - 2,038. 3. Corinth - 1,72...

Most Played Title: Gettysburg. Next Most Played: Shiloh then Chickamauga. Best for Newcomers (my opinion only): Shenandoah. Least Played: Forgotten then Petersburg. |

I actually think Lee getting the ANV out of Pennsylvania and tying up the AotP on the Rappahannock in the second half of 1863 was some of his best work - no territory conceded really, hardly any losses, six months of time gained for the Confederacy. An army in retreat is a difficult thing. Stuart's...

If they'd won at Gettysburg then Union casualties would have been more severe. If broken on Day 3 there would have been plenty of time to follow through (no nighttime looming like Chancellorsville) and Lee may have been able to deal the devastating fatal blow he had long sought. The AotP would have ...

"If Lee wins at Gettysburg, what can he do? He is out of artillery ammunition and his supply line ... Do you see it happening differently?" Yes, I see it very differently. Lee had plenty of artillery ammunition ( https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924077728255&seq=357&q1...

Toward a New Civil War Paradigm The heading of that episode caught my attention. Agreed that invading Kentucky was a very bad idea. It would have been much better if they had remained neutral to leave open the possibility that some hothead in the Union would invade that State. I disagree about Gett...

That's odd. If it's the start of a turn, and the units were disrupted from the previous turn, then given the Command rating of their leader they should have recovered from disruption. It may be worthwhile to send the file to WDS support and perhaps they can explain it.

I thought I'd responded to this thread before now but obviously not. I did address the essentials of this issue in another thread ( https://wargame.ch/board/acwgc/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=24023#p126958 ). In it I said: In Battle Tactics of the Civil War Griffth ... also analyses average ranges across...

https://armyhistory.org/mine-warfare-in-the-civil-war/ Good article on mine usage. Much more common than I thought. In response to the mines, Major General George B. McClellan, who also had been an American observer of the Crimean War, vowed to “make the prisoners remove [the mines] at their own pe...

I never read much about either land mines or balloons being used after the Peninsula Campaign. I'm sure there is a reason for this. The balloons weren't very effective and in 1863 the Union Balloon Corps was disbanded. The Confederate land mines were more effective and used throughout the war. Thei...
