Hi, Drew, Some things I have noticed playing the Seven Days scenario (8b): As the Rebs, I tried to hold the outer fortifications and was forced to withdraw because the Yanks in the woods were almost as well protected (-40%) and I was in the fort (-50%). Were the fortifications that poor in the East?...

Here is something I picked up on the net. It is after the ACW, but possibly the four soldiers named themselves after this comic group, if they were at a reunion. Casey performed primarily in New York's political clubs and back rooms, for which he was rewarded with a job at City Hall. His life was a ...

I don't think artillery needs to be strengthened for melee, but perhaps its ability to disrupt attackers ought to be increased. That way it would require a concerted effort to take a battery from the front, but it would still be vulnerable from the flank. A lot of people seem to think artillery was ...

I am against ranged fire for mounted cavalry and infantry in column. Trying to hit anything at 125 yards from the back of a horse would be difficult indeed. I think mounted fire is factored into melee. The Civil War columns are road columns. If they had assault columns, I'd say you could allow for f...

I like the flexibility provided by sections, but am not particularly fond of the clutter. In the Battleground games, smaller batteries were at a fire disadvantage due to the game engine, but that should not be the case under the HPS system. I also think that the system ought to be uniform; if one si...

Hi, Don't know anything about New York, but when I was a child I got the AWI set from the back of a comic book for my birthday. They were small and made of cheap hard plastic, but there were a lot of them and I got a lot of pleasure from it. Not at all like the Marx soldiers though. I doubt you woul...

Hi, Your suggestion isn't a bad idea. With the current victory display you can get information that wasn't available to commanders except in very general terms. It also leads to gamey solutions to gain or deny points needed to change the level of victory, particularly toward the end. On the other ha...

General Mallory, The Sioux uprising had no connection to the Confederacy. Essentially, Sioux on the reservation up in Minnesota felt they were being mistreated by the Indian Agent and went on the rampage. It was touch and go for awhile until a force led by a Gen Sibley defeated the indians. I think ...

The explanation in the rules for units running out of ammo on the first volley is that a unit at Shiloh went to the front without any ammunition. I'm not going to say it didn't happen in other battles, but I have never heard of it. I have heard of bad ammo having an effect (Honey Springs) or wet amm...

Hi, Rich, The only thing I have noticed is that there is a hill in the middle of the Tennessee River in a Shiloh scenario. You can select contours and see it. I forgot to see if you could get a better view with a gunboat parked there. If not, it probably isn't important. MG Mike Mihalik 1/III/AoMiss...

While we're messing with the engine, lets give the routed guys full movement-at least! And I think their defense in melee once you do catch them is too high. Half strength for routed troops who can't even shoot when good order troops who are isolated defend at quarter strength doesn't make much sens...

I think the Tiller Civil War games are the best available right now, but I can't speak for everyone. They are turn-based, not real time like the Sid Meiers games, which I've never played. This club was created to facilitate email play of the John Tiller-designed Civil War games. MG Mike Mihalik 1/II...

Hi, Gen McBride, In a book "Arms and Equpment of the Civil War", by Jack Coggins (1962), he maintains that black powder rifles had a higher trajectory than modern high-power rifles, so the kill zone was relatively small. In other words, a bullet that missed a man probably wouldn't hit someone a hund...
