Actually, I'll bet 375 is close to the average size of the regiments at Gettysburg. Part of the problem with making 375 man units is that they don't stay at that level for long once you get into combat. The trick is to be able to fire 375 men out of a hex that might contain, say, two 250-man units. ... |

I agree with Col White; firepower out of a hex ought to be a function of how many men are in the hex, not how many units. Same thing with density modifiers. I think the max that ought to be able to fire out of a hex should be the max that could fit into a two-rank line, which is the basis for the No... |

I have the book, and pretty much agree with Hank. Griffith did make a point that Civil War tactics that evolved were the result of field expediency by untrained and inexperienced troops and not optimum, which to him was the French chasseur a pied model of double-timing around the battlefield. I got ... |

Hi, Pierre,
I have all options checked and it is phased play with auto defensive fire. What I found out, though, is that this only seems to work for pbem, not hot seat. Could that be the problem?

I don't think no ZOC is as crazy as it sounds. It would force folks to maintain an integral line, which is how they fought in the 19th century. There may have to be some other changes to the engine to make it practical, though. Like the action point system mentioned in another thread, perhaps. Havin... |

In the old SSI games, they broke down the losses into killed, wounded and POW/missing, but I think it was by a formula, and they didn't require guards. In reading about battles, I always wondered how those too wounded to move were counted, as wounded or as prisoners of the victorious army? And what ... |

Hi, Al, I disagree with you because I believe that, to the extent possible, the game engine ought to reward proper tactical doctrine and punish improper doctrine. Perhaps some things can't be helped, such as being able to immediately respond to events happening two miles away. But I think there is s... |

What I like about the single phase is the opportunity fire and the ability to change formation anytime during the turn. The reason we never play it anymore is that the opportunity fire is unpredictable and weak. The recent change that gives you the option to select mandatory fire before melee is a w... |

Hi, Al, I'm for no zones of control also, but I think it would have to be in conjunction with more realistic hex restrictions. By that I mean that while a hex can physically hold 1000 men, anything over, say, 500 would be superfluous for fire and melee. Similar restrictions on artillery. According t... |

Hi, Brad, My experience is that the current rules don't help the Rebs in most battles. When my opponent Kelly Ross has superior numbers, he simply extends his lines, forcing me to extend mine or retreat before he surrounds me. When I extend my lines, he concentrates on the inevitable weak point. If ... |

Hi, Sean, I also found out the hard way that forward retreats aren't allowed, way back when Corinth first came out. Apparently, it was that way in the Battleground games as well, but I never picked up on it. My research indicates that very few units surrendered during a pitched battle, or if they di... |

Hi, Pierre, The only comparable game I have looked at is Panzer Campaigns, and I think the way they handle it is that melee uses up so many action points that you can only attack once per unit. But you can attack a unit as many times as you have units capable of doing so. It is still advantageous fo... |

Hi, Al, Did Frank Hunter do "Sumter to Appomattox"? That was supposed to be a good game, but I guess I never mastered the learning curve. After trying to move some ships and troops without much success, I gave up and filed it next to Frank Grabowski's effort. It may have been realistic, but I didn't... |

Hi, Pierre, What you are working on sounds a lot like the operation point system that SSI used in Gettysburg twenty years ago, and I think that system is superior to what we have now, although the games we have now are much better. Good luck on your project. Imho, there has been a crying need for a ... |

In fairness to Capt Smith, he has already volunteered his services, and I expect he will be an asset to this club. I'm sure a lot of us Rebs who quit the Union when Mr Lincoln got elected know a bit about responding emotionally to issues. Respectfully, MG Mike Mihalik 1/III/AoMiss/CSA |
