14. One of the toughest units to eliminate is a routed unit that is not isolated. If a routed unit is isolated, just one combat unit that can melee can overrun it, even a one man unit. A unit that is not routed only requires four units to eliminate it (the three rear hexes and one front hex with all...

13. Before you start a scenario, verify what the movement points are for commanders/cavalry both on the road and in forests. They are not standard from one designer to the other. Also verify how much losses of infantry/cavalry/artillery/supply count as your scenario starts accumulating them because ...

12. If you can afford to give ground, the every other hex is usually the best defense. If you can’t afford to give ground, you generally don’t have much choice but to use an every hex defense. The reason for the every other is so that fewer units can establish a longer solid zone of control and beca...

11. I’ve usually had poor results when I tried to do what the scenario narrative told me that I needed to do. It has been better when I made up my own mind what I needed to do to win the scenario.

10. If you have the biggest and baddest army on the map, you might be able to just charge and bull your way through. However, especially if you aren’t the biggest and baddest, you had better be using some finesse and some surprise (strategy and tactics).

9. Leaders in the front line are in danger of being shot or captured. The advantage of having them there is increasing your odds of winning if that unit is subject to a melee. You don’t have much choice if your rear is insecure but assuming that your rear is secure enough that a leader can stand in ...

In the words of one of my previous commanders, "Do something! I don't care if it is wrong, but do something!"

8. Remain aware of your command and control. You can’t always maintain it for every unit but utilize it as best that you can. That applies from brigade all of the way to army commander.

7. If you are occupying entrenchments, they usually cut your losses by 50%. If you also build breastworks for those entrenchments, they usually cut your losses by an additional 40%. With both of those, your casualties from firing (infantry or artillery regardless of the distance) is going to be negl...

The commanders (if by themselves) are supposed to be behind the lines in safe territory and not out scouting in front of the lines. That means that it is the judgement of the General in Chief who is operating the key board that he will be safe by himself. Occasionally, the opposing General in Chief ...

6. If you are going to send someone out ‘there’ by themselves to be the eyes of the army, they are subject to being surrounded and lost, so why send your biggest and best unit; think of the possible points lost and send your smallest and/or weakest unit.

5. This may be the 1860s but both armies have the strongest and fastest flag wavers in history. One man sitting on a mountaintop can immediately tell the rest of the army what he sees, so take advantage of it. But stick to club rules [Rule 5.1.2] and don’t use commanders as scouts out in front of yo...

4. Stay aware of your flanks. Never let anyone out flank you without a least knowing before they get there (so that you can react and avoid being out flanked).

3. In order to conduct a melee, any leader is equal to any other leader. Why would you use someone who has excellent ratings when someone of lesser quality is available?

2. If the terrain allows, put your artillery in the hex(es) behind your infantry where your artillery can offer fire support (preferably elevated terrain with excellent field of sight) but can’t be reached for melee.
