On a serious note, my take away from our recent trip to the Battlefields of the Peninsula, Spotsylvania, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Salem Chuch and the Wilderness is two fold....

1)I am grateful to those who have preserved Battelefields such as Gettysburg and Antietam and I am so fortunate to have these fields close to where I live.

2)I am also grateful to those who have preserved the remaining parts of the battlefield I just visited and I am grateful that I was able to visit these fields. But what I don't understand is how these battlefields fell to townhouses, shopping malls and in some cases, great degrees of neglect.

I don't know the history of what happened but money took the fileds away and money is needed to maintain what is left....

Check out http://www.civilwar.org.

They can always use some assistance.

They work with local and state preservation efforts, to help save areas.

It's lost a little bit at a time and here is another piece going down:

"Just when you thought things could not get any worse around Harpers Ferry this happens....

On Wednesday, March 21 at 7:00 pm the Charles Town Planning Commission, is meeting at the Independent FIre Hall in Ranson. They will consider annexing 638.61 acres just south and west of the old Cliffside Hotel. The entire area, currently zoned mostly rural, will be rezoned General Commercial and become part of the city of Charles Town.

This is no joke. Gene Capriotti, Jim Gibson, Herb Jonkers, Cessarina Wysong, and several others filed papers on January 30, 2007 to annex the Flea Market, Old Standard Quarry, Buglers Rest, and various other parcels into Charles Town. They have also filed a map that proposes 16 high-rise condo towers along the ridge of Bolivar Heights, facing the Shenandoah River. These towers will be seen for miles and dominate the area. They also propose a "signature office tower", and ten other commercial buildings along the Millville Road...and this is just Phase I.

This is all possible because of the construction of the Old Standard sewer plant and the trespass across the Perry Orchard. Traffic at the intersection of Route 340 and 27 will require a major light and interchange. Traffic from this new city will inundate the Harpers Ferry area and the gap. It will endanger local citizens who already have to wait 45 minutes for 911 responses. The additional children in the condo towers will swamp Shipley School. It will be the end of Harpers Ferry National Park as we know it.

You can thank the Charles Town Government for this. They are reaching over four miles past their boundary to make this happen. The only link to Charles Town is Route 340. It is the ultimate abuse of "pipestem annexation."

We all know that in Jefferson County, following the law only happens when public officials find the nerve to stand up to the developers. This has been extremely rare over the last twenty years.

Please attend the March 21 meeting and make sure the destruction of the Harpers Ferry area is stopped.

Here's a couple recent articles on preservation efforts. The second link lists the top 10 most endangered Civil War sites for 2007 and explains why they're endangered. The battlefields were chosen based on geographic location, military significance, and the immediacy of current threats.

Thank you Col.Denner for the information. It's totally sad that these land developers prey on our heritage. It's even sadder that local government officials share the same bed. It's my opinion that the only resource left in dealing with these people is the sword and anyone can read into that anyway they like.....

Gentlemen,

The rich history of our nation whether good or bad has already been rewritten. Therefore, it only yet sadly follows that the tangible evidence of that history be eradicated. Something of which none of us should be surprised about.
