For those not lucky enough to be at Tiller Con here is a modified version of Campaign Gettysburg Scenario 007 that I am testing. It can be downloaded from:

http://www.notso.org/csawc/Shared/Shared.aspx

Ignore the note saying not implemented, the link will down load it but it is still a test version.

Download consists of three files. The scn file and a pdt file that it uses plus a word document listing the changes.

My objective in developing the scenario is to make the large map 007 scenario follow the historic flow of the battle and to try to balance the game some since it heavily favors the Union. Some changes I plan have to wait for HPS to issue a new update supporting weather and night march fatigue.

The scenario is designed to work under Version 1.02 of the game and with all options selected.

Yes, it will show up as one of the first scenarios once the three files are unzipped into the "Campaign Gettysburg" folder if you use default name. The .doc file isn't needed it just list the changes. Game should only be played with all options on since I made my changes assuming this.

The basic numbers:
81,600 Infantry versus 64,000
12,000 Cavalry versus 10,200
362 guns versus 273

While the CSA might have a slight quality advantage I believe overal the Union only a slight disadvantage there.

The CSA player's officer have a higher command span but this is large negated by having more regiments per officer to control and more brigades per division commander. Actually the Corps structure of the Union gives them more officers that can rally routed units.

From my battles the Rebel player has to inflict at least 10,000 more casualties on the Union during the first two days than they suffer to have even a chance of winning the game on the third day. I suspect but haven't verified that the Union player can make a come back and win on the third day after losing 15,000 more than the Reb. This is usually due to the Rebel player running out of artillery and small arms ammo rendering what little they have useless.

Luckily in most of my games of Gettysburg the Union player resigns after just having a bad first day sometimes with as little as a 5,000 man margin. They forget that during the night and second day they have more men arrive than the size of the whole Rebel army.

What I've found is that Rebel commanders know exactly what the Union has on the field starting the first day and aggressively attack the Union cavalry then what historical commanders did. Knowing that the Union has to use Buford's cavalry division to slow down the Rebel advance and try to kill as many horse as possible giving them a large point advantage to start with. Then they also know how underrated the quality of the XI Corps is and will be extra aggressive attacking them knowing that they can cause a lot more casualties then they receive. I've seen games where the Confederate player can rack up enough victory points on day one that they can sit back on Seminary Ridge and dig in and really hurt the Union as they try to counterattack. The only other option is to retreat the cavalry as quickly as possible and avoid combat but then it gets very difficult to hold on to Cemetery Ridge. Yes, the Union has a big numerical advantage if you just look at the raw numbers but if you look at when those numbers are available and what makes up those numbers when then you find it is a very difficult situation for the Union.

To echo Mar's comments, it's a real bear trying to attack from the East or South of Gettysburg - the terrain is terrible!

Is it possible to turn off objective points, then it just comes down to who inflicts the most damage. I am sure there is a flaw in my thinking, so feel free to explain why we need objective points.
