Anyone seen a limbered gunboat? (52,57) in the historical Chickasaw Bayou scenario of HPS Vicksburg. It seems it can't fire; nor can it change formation; what *can* it do?

(Posted this originally in the QM Depot, but no Federal officers seemed to know an answer. Maybe a Reb can solve this mystery for me?)

That's right in John's game engines a boat is merely an artillery unit that has movement in water, it acts as though it is on a bridge. Therefore, it cannot change formation.

If a boat ever routs and then rallies it rallies in limbered formation and cannot ever unlimber. Game over for that boat. Treat it as though it struck its colors.

If the boat starts a scenario limbered, then that's a scenario design boo-boo and needs to be corrected at that level. Not sure how you could do that, but anything is possible, I suppose.

Hi,

What I tried, and it worked, is going to the scenario editor, removing the Louisville, and replacing it on the river. It was "unlimbered". How it got "limbered" in the first place is beyond me, as apparently the change formation command doesn't work on boats. Probably ought to check with the scenario designer though. Maybe there was a historical reason the Louisville was "buttoned up".

I've never seen a gunboat rout.

Rich,

I've been able to get boats to rout in the EAW engine. I'm guessing it is possible to do the same in the ACW engine.

In Shiloh, I designed several naval battles with many gunboats firing at eachother. Never did they rout.

I have seen ships rout too. Where you have many, like at Louisbourg, it happens a lot.

I have no doubt that they rout in an EAW game, but good luck trying to get them to rout in the ACW. It won't happen.
