So far I've got the HPS titles working well in Vista. Now I'm trying the BG series.

In the past, I've been able to reinstall on XP simply by backing up the game directory, then pasting into Program Files the entire, patched, game directory. Then pasting the game's .ini file into the Windows directory got me the sounds and music.

So, I tried that in Vista. Game starts OK, but it reads an error on finding the scenario file. In Vista, I'm not placing the game in Program Files because Vista protects programs in there. However, I've placed the game directory under C:\ and Program Files too, but the scenario error persists. If I try to open the scenario inside the game, such as for custom scenarios, then the map can't be found. I suspect the game can be played in Vista, but the pathfinding to the subdirectories in the game seem to be broken.

By the way, I've tried running as administrator, setting compatibility to XP SP2 (for both the start.exe and the game .exe). With this kind of problem, I'm not even sure if using XP in MS Virtual PC would work.

Dirk,

Unfortunately, the BG games as we know them are not compatible with Vista. The Matrix re-release (which has been in the works since the Reagan administration) is supposed to be addressing that. Rumor has it that they were being released this month (but with Matrix you never know).

Have you just tried to install the games?

It should not matter where you install to, as long as the upgrades are installed from WITHIN the same game folder AND you use the TYPICAL install.

Yeah, I tried to install to a directory outside Program Files, then overwriting it with the patched game just so whatever pointers there were would see the install directory. No dice. It's frustrating because it seems like it ought to be a simple fix. I don't play them enough anymore to buy new versions, and the new ones probably won't work with folks still using the old versions. I'll probably try the Virtual PC option first, and as a last result have a second drive with XP on it for those games that can't be brought up to Vista compatibility.

I have installed BG Antietam and it works fine. Then I installed BG Gettysburg and at first it didn't work. I was having problems reading the map file. I downloaded the 134 patch, unzipped it, ran it, it works fine on my Vista system.

The original installs will work under VISTA. So do the Talonsoft patches. But the 32 bit updates from JT did not work for me.

This VISTA vs Talonsoft Battleground business is sounding more and more hopeful given I have been in dread of having to go to it when I end up having to replace my current machine which at the moment does everything I need it to do. I just figured to find people who kept an old XP going even if we had to play the games on one computer, zip and save to a disk and then send it from the VISTA machine. However, it seems to me that the "somewhat" success and Ernie's Advice, makes the future of Vista and BG not completely dim. Thanks for the info.
