What is the accepted norm or special rule that most players use
for engaging in combat at night. I know historically, like units engaging in melee in column, this was unhistorical and rarely
happened and then only under special conditions, like blundering
into an enemy with which there was no prior LOS, ford, bridge and attacks in town (for column melees).
Should night attacks be prohibited and what special circumstances
might they be allowed, as far as the general consensus of club members?

No consensus. Some do it, some don't. I usually try to reach an agreement with my opponents not to, but some say that attacking at night is so risky that they're happy to let their opponents try.

It used to be a real problem because of the morale penalty assessed against the defender, a penalty for which I can find little historical justification. There were few night attacks recorded during the war, and most of those were unsuccessful, such as at Gettysburg or Wauhatchie. I think the night fatigue penalties for melees now make a night attack prohibitively expensive, which acomplishes the goal I guess.

Thanks gentlemen,
I just wanted to make sure there was not some unsaid rule
about night attacks. It seems the effects built into the game,
large fatigues and routs cause more damage to the attacker than
the defender to discourage such attacks, but is left up to the
individual to take such risks.
