OK, given the complicated nature of this issue and limited time I didn't have all day trying to search the archives for any answers. So I'll describe the situation and invite comment.

Defending hex contains an unlimbered 2-gun artillery section and a 40-man mounted cavalry unit. Attacker is a 400-man dismounted cavalry unit. Can the attacker melee the hex?

Alternate situation...

Defending hex contains an unlimbered 2-gun artillery section and a 400-man mounted cavalry unit. Attacker is a 150-man, dismounted cavalry unit. Can the attacker melee the hex?

In both cases, what happens to the mounted, defending cavalry?

Try it and let us know.

Arty cancels mtd bonus, so you can melee mtd cav if stacked with arty, or inf. As far as I know.

I did a quick scenario editor setup to test it out.

I tested it four times:
All four cases had DISMOUNTED Cavalry attacking
1) against Mounted cavalry and unlimbered guns
- Yes they can melee, defending cavalry stays mounted
2) against Limbered guns and Mounted Cavalry
- Yes they can melee, defending cavalry stays mounted
3) against Mounted and Dismounted Cavalry
- Yes they can melee, defending cavalry stays mounted
4) against Mounted Cavalry and Column infantry
- Yes they can melee, both defenders stay in column or mounted

I hope that helps some. I believe you only cannot melee Mounted Cavalry if it is alone in a hex or with other Mounted Cavalry.

In each case tested, was the strength of the defending mounted cavalry included in the melee?

I just used random regiments of different size. I didnt try using the specific numbers you mentioned. I can't imagine numbers would matter whether or not you could do it.

What I meant to say was, does the defending mounted unit add its strength to the melee defense, or it is completely discluded?
