Why do I get files from some of my opponents that have a number in parenthesis within the file name, such as FILENAME (2).bte

I don't know why others may do that, but I change the name for each turn. So, File (1), File (2), File (3) would be Turn 1, 2, and 3 respectively. It helps me keep track of where I am in a game. I also keep paper notes on other aspects. When I was playing multiple games simultaneously such things came in handy.

However, I would be a bit uneasy if a got a file called something like 'File (3) (1) (1) (1) (1)'.

That's not the case with these. The opponents have no knowledge of what I am talking about. Also the numbering does not match the turn that we are playing [I've never seen it go beyond FILENAME (3).bte]. It's puzzling because I have some opponents that I have never seen this occur and other opponents that it is normal for it to occur with their file names. I'm not even sure if it occurs on their end or my end since they have no idea of what I am talking about.

The answer that I was expecting was that I had downloaded the file twice, thrice, or four times. I have done that before but those file names are (for example) FILENAME.bte (1) so that isn't the problem.

Thanks for the attempt to provide some clarity though.

I had an opponent who complained of this problem.
If you Google why does windows add a number to a filename when I attempt to download the same file again you get

Why it happens:
File System Limitation: A folder can't contain two files with the exact same name; one would replace the other.
Browser Protection: Your browser detects the existing file and automatically appends a number to create a new, unique entry, saving you from accidental data loss.

How to change this behavior:
Prompt to Save: In your browser's settings (Chrome, Edge, Firefox), find the "Downloads" section and enable the option to "Ask where to save each file before downloading" or "Ask me where to save files".
"Save As" Dialog: When the download starts, use the "Save As" option to manually rename the file or choose a different location, or select "Replace" if you intend to overwrite the old one.

By changing these settings, you can choose to manage duplicates yourself, rather than having the browser do it automatically.

If this is a new problem t's possible there was an update to the browser and it reset things to default.
I often have that problem with Windows reverting to their default settings after an update.

If I'm understanding correctly what you are referring to, then the circumstances are different. The last file played and the new downloaded file are in separate folders (Save folder vs Download folder). If I goof and download the file again before I move the previous one to the replace the one in the Save folder, then the system does add a number [FILENAME.bte (1)] but after the end of the file name. In this instance, something is adding a number in the middle of the filename [FILENAME (1).bte] and that number can be 1, 2, or 3 (never seen a 4 or above to my memory) which obviously has nothing to do with how many times that the filename is located anywhere in my files.

I typically just rename the file while it is in the Download folder and then cut and paste it into the appropriate Save folder, overwriting the prevous game turn file.

If I misunderstand what you are trying to tell me, try again. My wife has to all of the time.
