OK, we can do the whole "real coffee and shoes" vs "rebel mystique and peculiar smell" discussion again, but I'm going to say .... the one that suits you!

Go to the LINKS EXPRESS http://garyned.tripod.com/

From here you can visit every Army's HQ (home page) and the various Taverns and watering holes. See which appeals to you, where do you feel at home or think you will fit in.

Maybe it's the banter in the Tavern, the name of a particular Corps or Division, the look of the page or the medals you <s>can</s> <u>will</u> win, but I'm pretty sure one of them will speak to you.

Look around until you have found the spot that is just right for your tent...

Ola,

There are two major differences between the two armies: size and quality.

The Union has more poorer quality troops that are almost uniformly well equiped and are backed by a large artllery corps. Union leadership in the games is of variable quality. The Union also normally has better supplies than the Rebels.

The Confederates have excellant infantry that is well lead. They have a smaller artillery corps that is organized in 4 gun batteries for the most part. They usually have ammunition problems in longer scenarios.

The question then is which arm do you feel most comfortable with? If you prefer infantry then perhaps the Rebels would well suite you. Their infantry tends to stay where it's placed. If you prefer artillery then the Union would be a good choice. Cavalry is hard to play and there are several ways to use them. The Rebels have a large cavalry force that is sometimes poorly equiped. The Union also has an excellant cavalry force but they often aren't available on the field.

Typically the Union will outnumber the Rebels by about a third. If you play battles of attrition choose the Union. If you prefer "One Gallant Rush" choose the Rebels.

Hope this doesn't obscure things too much

Maj Chuck Berdanier,

Glad to here that the Confederate Army has better leadership, and the Union leadership "is of variable quality".......[:D] Don't know if my record shows this (but others might), but......oh... you where likely speaking of the leaders in the game...[:D]My mistake....[:)]

Best of Luck Ola Berli--I hope you find whatever choice you make enjoyable. Seems like they have given you great advise.

I think your statements are more geared to the Battleground games rather than the HPS titles. In Peninsula for example both armies have their fair share of low quality troops, and varying gun section sizes. Cavalry is also plentiful in many battles, especially in Gettysburg, but is "expensive" so historical proctices must be observed.

With 5 titles out, and more on the way, differences are well worth noting.

Easy, check the mess tent.

Sorry if you've already signed up; I guess I should have mentioned it earlier ... but yeah, you should definitely check what, <u>and if</u> you get to eat.

But not to worry, I hear possum stew with poke can be ... can be ... can be ... very nutritious, if you're hungry enough, and it's not too old, or raw, or ....

Ola,

Since we've deviated from the serious, some advice. Take along a bar soap for those times you need to foam at the mouth (because you won't find any there!). [;)]

Glad we could offer some advice.

Best wishes,

Sir:
The best side is the Rebel. Ours cause is Holy and Just.
In the CSA there is no doubt that the best Army in the American Civil War was the Army of Northern Virginia ...this is equal in the 3rd Millenium.

Don't mean to be ugly but do you want to fight to free men or to enslave them?

Not meaning to be ugly back . . . . But . . . [:D]

To me it would more of a question of "do ye wish to Fight and uphold the basic right of Political Free-Determination by the People or the Tyrannical Imposition of Dictatorial Commercialism and Industrialisation on a "Free" People - (regardless of Race)?

Free determination by whom? Not the 40% who were slaves. If they'd had their say, I doubt there'd have been any majorities for secession.

But that's just reality - this is gaming.[:D]

Gentlemen:
I do not want to initiate the eternal polemic but for Mister Lincoln the slaves were not mattering. Only he used them to attack to the Confederation and to try that they were beginning a revolt.[:(!]
The slaves of the zones controlled by the Union were not liberated[?][?][?]...They were not deserving Mr. Lincoln's good[:0], humanitarian[:p] and disinterested[:)] laws.[:D]
