I'll grab an easy one (for me, I went to U of Minn for a year).

Fort Snelling was built in 1825 where the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers converge. It is in Minneapolis, Minnesota and can still be visited (I think).

That's the only one on the list still in use, but Minnisota wasn't a state in 1825, so that wouldn't be the answer he was looking for?

Fort Benton is in Montana. I assume it was the original.
Respectfully submitted,

Fort Meade is in South Dakota. I was there last year . Its used these days as a training center for the SD National Guard. They have a great museum there of Custer era stuff. They say this is where Custer launched out from on his mission to Little Big Horn.

Gentlemen,

Did my homework on Ft. Snelling. It was completed when what is now Minnesota was part of the Northwest Territory.

That was not as easy to find as I had thought it would be.

And what state or territory was South Dakota a part of at that time? [:D]

In 1861 the Dakota Territory was organized made of up areas of Montana, Wyoming, and North and South Dakota; in 1882 the Dakota Territory comprised the area to later become the states of North and South Dakota.

Mine was closer to the Civil War times, though, around 1850's.

General Sands,

Fort Massachusetts was the name of the brick fortress located on Ship Island, off the Mississippi Gulf Coast (south of Biloxi).

I thought I remembered this, but Googling 'Ship Island' didn't even mention the name of the fort (although I did find a site with pictures of the fort). Digging deeper, though, into the 'Education' area, I came up with verification of the name.

Your humble servant,

Well, Gen Mallory is getting closer to the Fort Massachusetts I am talking about. Strange, that there would be some MANY (well possibly three forts) named Massachusetts.

Peters= Massachusetts
Mallory= Mississippi
Sands= Not telling, yet!!!

Fort Benton was built by the American Fur Company in 1847. It was sold to the Military in 1865. When it was sold to the military, and thus became an official fort, it was located in the Montana Territory. Montana Territory was created in 1864.

At the time of its original building, the area was a part of the Louisiana Purchase and had not yet been made an official territory of the U.S..
