There was an article on Milton Holland in the Dallas paper awhile back, as he is the first Medal of Honor winner from Texas (but far from the last.) His father was the brother of his owner, and at some point before the war freed him and sent him north. His father later joined the Confederate army and was a major when he was killed at Mansfield in Louisiana. The rest of the story.
