I heard from a barmaid who heard it from her sister who works for an officer (but no gentlemen!) who is an orderly for a Colonel who is in the brigade of a general who got it from his tailor whose wife is on a committee with the mistress of a high ranking Southern officer who told her, confidentially, that Lt. Gen. Stiles is up for promotion!
Surely this cannot be so! Our own General Stiles up for promotion? I'd sooner expect to see Yankees in Richmond than I would to see such a misfortune befall the Confederacy! Woe is us!
I am hoping that this rumor is unfounded and is merely the work of witches who spread rumors in the night like bees do pollen. For surely any promotion of Stiles would have to be the work of some sort of magician!
Alas, Sancho, let us ride on! I fear the work of the Great Enchanter has befallen these people! We must ride on and destroy him!
