American Civil War Game Club (ACWGC)

been gone from the club a few years but i noticed my games i must agree to a column attack in towns and crossings? It was a used tactic as in Union Gen Upton @ the Mule Shoe .I think that this is a bull sh&*t rule what do yall think?

I have never been bothered either way if my opponents want attack in column house rules or not, as long as they tell me before we start the game.

I think it should only be used in Overland against trenches...

Totally (almost) agree with Jim Pfleck -- starting May 10, the day of Upton's famous attack.

The column formation in these games is designed for traveling on roads. Historically, "attack columns" were a totally different thing, including Upton's charge.

A column attack against entrenchments isn't a problem. As a Reb, it's bring it on. I would love for the Union to use column formation to attack trenches. Getting stuck in front of entrenchments while in column is a gift to line infantry.

My problem with column formation is it allows the player to use roads and trails to quickly move large distance and then attack by melee. In the case of Turn play and Overland, it allows units to move three hexes through woods and then attack enemy units it comes in contact with.

If the game had a "true" column of companies formation, it would be different. They couldn't use road movement. And, they would have very large penalties against them if fired on particularly by artillery.

Rebel column attacks have been generally attributed to announcements by Union officers that free drinks are being offered in their various taverns! These episodes usually result in extensive repairs having to be made to the taverns, starting with the front doors which are quickly obliterated by the mad rush of thirsty graybacks. If I am not mistaken, at the last CSA Drinking Symposium I attended held by General McOmish it was impressed upon all the students that their only goal in such circumstances should be to secure their drinks as soon as possible in any manner available, even if it came to overturning the bar or tearing down the roof.

Unknowingly, and out of misplaced gentlemanly courtesy, the Union officers seriously jeopardized the war effort by enduring such reconstruction costs. For their part the Rebels were realizing and acquiring notable skills, which it was feared would be utilized on the battle fields.
