I ran across a website for teachers with a Jeopardy style Civil War game. Cool, it's for junior high or maybe high school.

Question:
Which two battles were fought in Union territory?


Alright. What's the answer?

Hint: Your brain should hurt you as you ponder this one.

This has to be a trick question. But for high schoolers there is no way they would be expected to know anything except the major battles.

Gettysburg has to be one answer. Pennsylvania is not a "territory" but a state, I suppose the question is written poorly.

The second battle is probably Antietam because it is the other major battle fought outside the seceded states. But if you define "Union territory" as the non-seceded states then you ignore every other battle fought in Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky, and Maryland.

Ignoring the obvious deficiencies with this question my answer is Gettysburg and Antietam. For a high school level history class the teacher probably is looking for the two big battles as answers.

Gettysburg and Antietam. Not because it is correct but because that's the most popular answer to a bad question. Many battles occurred in MD, KY and MO.

I must say Gettysburg ... but then I am going to say the Battle of Corydon, IN. I am thinking though that the definition of a battle and a definition of Union Territory must most likely come into play as well before giving the final answer. <grin>

The answer, apparently, is Gettysburg and Antietam. As some of you pointed out - those are states and not territories. And one might also add that there was no such thing as "Union territory" during the war. Wasn't it McClellan who crowed about expelling Lee from the Union only to have Lincoln point out that the entire nation was America.

This ranks up there with "Who was buried in Grant's Tomb?" as one of the more obnoxious Civil War questions.
