Friends,
I joined this Club (the only Club I have the time or desire to belong to) because I have always loved the history of the Civil War. I grew up playing the old TS games but never knew such a Club existed until this year. When I stumbled upon this Club my eyes bugged out and I felt like a kid all over again! I still get excited whenever I get an email from a Club member because, no matter what it contains, it is from a friend who shares the same interests as I do.
In an age that values speed, simplicity, and apathy I am more than happy to be a part of such a Club! Here I find men who don't mind getting into an argument over principles! I also find men who enjoy discussing history, strategy, politics, voting, Ginger versus Mary Ann, alcohol, Johnny Carson, John Wayne, Robin Hood, and a million other topics too numerous to go through.
I love men like Hank Smith and Jeff Laub because they care enough to stand up and argue until they are red in the face because they believe they are right. Aren't principles what the Civil War was about afterall?! Do our arguments get a bit old? YES! Do they need to be taken private when between individuals?! Oh God, YES! But I am happy to know that there are those here who would rather argue all day about the voting rights of a Lieutenant Colonel than know that not a single person gave a damn about anything that happened here.
This Club will be fine! There are many great men here with lots of ideas, opinions, plans, and hopes. Will we all always agree? No. But thats what makes it fun! There are, and will continue to be, plenty of new members who want to be a part of this world of ours.
Evidence? Well right now the majority of the VMI staff have only been in the Club for less than six months! And, this may shock some people even more, WE VOLUNTEERED! Why did we volunteer for the positions? For Awards? Glory? Women? Heck you can keep your awards and glory... the women we will take happily [:)]... but we volunteered because we wanted to be a part of the Club in some greater way.
This Club still has a great amount of appeal to new members - I am one of them so I know. It is based on strategy games that are some of the finest and most addictive I have ever played. It has a history and a membership that is second to none. It is filled with great members who, even when we argue with them, we would give the shirt off our back to. Why? Because under all the crap we spew at times the foundation of the Club is as strong as it ever was.
So, take heart, men of the ACWGC, the future is bright for us! There are games to play, politics to be (respectfully) argued, history to be debated, Armies to run, tournaments to play and organize, records to be kept, websites to be updated and Cadets to train. Life goes on! Is it like it was 5 or 10 years ago? Will it ever be again? From what I am told - Nope! Then, hell, let's make it better! Or, at least lets give it the old college try! I sure am!
End of Pep Talk [:D]
And if anyone else has anything good to say I would sure love to read it! We could all use a little positive energy I believe.
