Well I took Dale up on his suggestion and sent him a game file from BGS Prairie Grove. He got and made his move and I had no problems extracting his file into mine. It opened and played just fine.
Seems to me this is actually a pretty cheap way to preserve the old BattleGround games. At about $10 bucks a shot ($50 total) you can have the complete set which is ready to go, no upgrades needed. I have been pricing the BG games on Ebay for the past couple of years and they go for a lot more than $10 bucks.
