My youngest daughter has a job offer in Alexandra. Any info about surrounding towns and schools would be appreciated. Dad is not too keen on sending baby girl off to the big city.

Born and raised in Northern Virginia (Stafford and Fredericksburg), although a bit south of Alexandria. The area is basically one big metropolis. It's nice to get away from it and head further south, but the rush hour commute makes that unbearable (did for me anyway).

I don't live there anymore, and was glad to get away, so I might not be the best one to ask but if you have any specific questions I might remember a thing or two. [:)]

Arlington is the hot spot area, as is Fairfax, Springfield & Woodbridge to name a few...commute is awful in this area, though she won't have to battle into DC across any of the bridges that is helpful to say the least, though 95 south & northa in NVA are bad enough anytime...Old Town Alexandria is nice...stay away from the area where Springfield & Alexandria meet up....parts of that area are not nice...

But depending on what she is into for shopping, dining et al, Arlington is suppose to be pretty nice. Oh and if she's gonna make less then $40,000 - $50,000 or so, she may need to get a roomate or commute from further out....cost of living is some of the worst in the country....

Scott, you know the area well... that's some good advice. [;)]

I actually lived in Arlington, then Woodbridge, then Stafford (where the bombs from Quantico would rattle all the windows in my house) and Fredericksburg. The further south I moved, the further south the creeping metropolis grew lol.

Well, I think the guys have pretty much summed it up. Terrible traffic, high cost of living, and all the other pains that go along with big city life.

On the other, the federal district in D.C. is beautiful, there is lots of culture and nightlife, good food, big city sports, outdoor activities, a metro system, etc.

Many of the young professionals get small apartments or get a roommate. The rents in Alexandria aren't too bad and there are other locations like Ballston and Virginia Square (along the metro line) that are hot areas for young people.

Fredericksburg is still nice but Northern Virginia is creeping close. Perhaps I'll have to move to Appomattox and surrender (retire).

Was stationed at Fort Belvoir back in the late 70's, loved the area and the bike ride into Alexandria from the George Washington Parkway way very nice. Was back in the area a couple of years ago and thought that the direction west towards Leesburg was nice with some good roads? Quieter area.

Indeed, the Metro area in 30 years will go from Wilmington to Richmond... [:D] There is already nothing really left between Baltimore & DC...

But Muddy is right as well, I love downtown DC, the wide open Mall, as well as the wide streets, lots of green space, no huge skyscrapers, so no feeling like you are in a trench....you can see the sky and the sunsets on a great day are amazing! More culture and food then you can stick in a history textbook....I am always exploring new things...

Also not far from the mountains or the ocean for that matter.....

There is also something to be said about living by the seat of power.

There are worse areas to live in.
