For his consistent and close attention to his duties as the Commander of the Union Army of the Cumberland, General Dirk Gross is awarded the Outstanding Service Medal. Under General Gross's command the AotC continued its superb record of combat efficiency and activity. His regular reports and performance of his duties imbued the AotC with a sense of stability and security, even when some of its finest officers were tapped by UA Headquarters for duties elsewhere. General Gross maintained a viable, trustworthy relation with both his own officers and superiors, his focus clearly centered upon the continued level of health and welfare of his command. His commitment to the leadership of that organization over this past year has been much appreciated and well received by all.
