Is their any way to pause or slow down a battle replay so as to get a better view of what your opponent did?

AFAIk not, a little break can be achieve if you turn off on-map results but helps only at spots where there is fire/melee combat, and afaik it must be done by both players to work.

Only real thing that could work is to record the replay and then view it with some kind of media player.
You could try FRAPS for recording.
It sounds inconvenient but in case you have long replays it's really helpful as it's annoying to watch the replay again and again just to find the little spot that you wanted to take a closer look.
