PostPosted: Sat May 06, 2006 3:54 am
OK, I've been through all of the postings for the year on the MD and can't find it. I know that there is a way to do it. Can someone tell me how to make a master disk that will start all of my HPS and BG games?

It's quite simple and works for both the Talonsoft and HPS games.
1. First make sure you've made a "full" install of each of the games, otherwise, for example, the videos of the BG games won't work, as the game will be looking for them on your CD instead of on your HD installation.
2. Somewhere on your hard drive create a folder for each game title. This folder must have exactly the same name as the game folder on the original game cd (e.g. BGN, BGG, Battleground Chickamauga, Campaign Corinth, etc.).
3. Next, simply copy the main game executable file (e.g. "BGG.EXE", "cpg.exe") for each title from the original cds to the corresponding newly created folder for each title. You don't need any of the other files on your new disc.
4. Write these new folders/files to your new disc and you are ready to go.[8D]

And here is another way of doing it: http://members.tripod.com/garyned/Disk_Copy.htm

Antony,

That was the best and briefest explanation I've seen. Sorry, but just for clarification, if I don't have a "full" install for all my HPS games (i.e. they are all currently installed in the same state as I left the "music" off for each and every one of them) would things get hung up? I'm limited on my hard drive and all of my installations are without the music. I think I already believe the answer is that this won't work for me. *sigh*

Thanks

Hi Den!

The Disk won't work for Ye if'n Ye have the Music option selected to Play on the Toolbar - as " for example, the videos of the BG games (OR the MUSIC(, won't work, as the game will be looking for them on your CD instead of on your HD installation. "

The Music would possibly feck things up . . . mainly becos it's a constant feature when turned on. The videos are intermittent features . . . so, the program would prob'ly ignore 'em if'n it couldn't find 'em.

I can't swear to this theory . . but it might be worth a shot! [:D]

Den,

I can't be absolutely sure but I would imagine the games would run just fine except for the fact you wouldn't have the music, as Pat pointed out. When you start the game I think it only looks for the main executable file on the cd (and even that is an old pre-patched version) so it wouldn't know if the music files were on the disc or not, until/unless you tried to select the music menu option.

Thanks Antony and Pat. You'll know whether it worked or not if you see the word "fecked" in my next post. [;)]

OK... I'm techno-challenged. So my CD-RW should have a file, for instance, "Campaign Penninsula" and in that file there should only be the cpp.exe file. So why do I still get a prompt to insert the CD. It seems like the computer is not finding the cpp.exe file on my CD.

It should have a DIRECTORY called Campaign Penninsula, not a file. In that directory the FILE CPP.EXE should be placed. Frankly, for the HPS games I prefer the nocd patches. You have to have a game cd for the BG series though...

1. Make a new folder named C:\HPS_disk.

2. Copy each HPS and BG game folder into that folder.

3. Delete ALL sub-folders for each game.

4. Delete ALL files in the main game folder you copied over, EXCEPT any ??????. EXE file. So, for most games you will have a game folder, like Campaign Shiloh that has one to four files in it.

5. Copy all folders to a CDROM. Do not copy the folder C:\HPS_disk. Do not rename any of the game folders.

6. Play away and never have to swap disks.

All my HPS/BG games were installed using the TYPICAL install and I can play the music, have the sound effects work without problems.

Once you have this system setup, ANY new HPS game can be added the same way and ADDED to your CDROM. OR you can simply burn an entire new CDROM.

I just ran through this and it works fine (music and all) I'll see if I can step everyone through it

1. Create a temp directory if one does not already exist. For example C:\temp

2. Create a folder for each game as follows:
C:\temp\Campaign Corinth
C:\temp\Campaign Shiloh
C:\temp\Campaign Peninsula
C:\temp\Campaign Ghettysburg
C:\temp\Campaign Ozark
C:\temp\Campaign Franklin

3. Copy the files from the original CD to these directories. For example, copy cp_start and cpo from Corinth; copy cp_start and cpf from Franklin; copy cp_start and cpg from Ghettysburg; copy cp_start and cpz from Ozark; copy cp_start and cpp from Peninsula; copy cp_start and cpi from Shiloh.

cp_start is for the campaign game and the others are for individual game scenarios.

4. Once you have the directories and the files copied, copy each folder to your writable CD. When finished you should have a CD with six folders and two files in each folder.

5. If you want to include the editors, then you will need to add those files to the CD.

That is it.

OK... not to be too dense, but how do you create a temp directory? I can't find that in my PC's help program. I have done this successfully with my BG games, but no luck yet with HPS.

Sorry, create a folder called temp. You probably have a folder called My Documents somewhere on your drive, you can create a temp folder under that one.

Folders and Directories are the same thing.

Hey Richard,

I make a master disk, as you stated, and copied the files that you have in your post. Copied them onto my HD then on to the CD-RW disc. They all worked except Cornith. When I tried to play Cornith I get a pop up saying to install the CD. All of the other ones work just great. Was there any other file that needed to copied on to the disk
