Cpl Adams and the rest of the 76th had a chance to grab a breather and a hardtack lunch. The 56th Pa was nearby and they exchanged news. They heard the Arty to their rear firing from the ridge, and disgustedly watched the shells miss their targets-a Reb gun emplacement. Shell after shell soared over the target.

Von Gilsa had ordered the shovels out and Sgt O`Toole was trying to make it stick. Schimmal and Reistag griped as usual and made half hearted efforts. "These krauts" O`toole mused " what happened to that Prussian military mentality?" He was glad to see Costners boys up in support,
