In Memoriam: W.E.B. Griffin 1929-2019
Prolific military novelist W.E.B. Griffin died on February 12, 2019. He was 89 years old.
Griffin’s real name was William E. Butterworth III and he went by many pen names throughout his career, including Alex Baldwin, Webb Beech, and Walter E. Blake. He joined the U.S. army in 1946 and served in the Army of Occupation in Germany. He later would be called back to serve in the Korean War. As a best-selling author, Griffin wrote over 200 books and has been published in more than 10 languages. He also collaborated with his son William E. Butterworth IV on 21 novels. Griffin’s stories are known for their attention to detail, historical accuracy, and interesting characters.

I am heartbroken, I have read all of his books published under his pen name of W.E.B. Griffin. I was introduced to the 'Brotherhood of War' series by a friend in the VVA when I was a member back in the '80's. It was a story of a number of US Army members who served in WWII and in the army of occupation in Germany and it really centered around army aviation and helicopters. I was stationed in the army at Fort Rucker, Alabama for a year in 1972-73, which is the training center for helicopter Pilot training so when the author talked about places like Daleville, Ozark, Enterprise and Dothan I knew those places. I will miss the wonderful tales that he spun!
